Billy Corgan & the Smashing Pumpkins want to Piss on Radiohead
Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins release their new album today, June 18th, and it is title Oceania. Corgan has recently laid into Radiohead, calling them “pompous”. The timing of his pot-stirring remarks is strategic as he grabs the attention of the Smashing Pumpkins faithful and the Radiohead die-hards just as his band drops their long-awaited, newest album.
Corgan preached about the current condition of rock in pop culture today. He told Antiquiet: “I can’t think of any people outside of Weird Al Yankovic who have both embraced and pissed on rock more than I have. Obviously there’s a level of reverence, but there’s also a level of intelligence to even know what to piss on.”
Corgan continued when he said: “Because I’m not pissing on Rainbow. I’m not pissing on Deep Purple. But I’ll piss on fucking Radiohead, because of all this pomposity. This value system that says Jonny Greenwood is more valuable than Ritchie Blackmore. Not in the world I grew up in.”
Oceania was recorded at Corgan’s private studio in Chicago with his band mates: guitarist Jeff Schroeder, drummer Mike Byrne, and bassist/vocalist Nicole Fiorentino. The powerful 13-song collection was produced by Corgan and Bjorn Thorsrud (a frequent collaborator with both the Pumpkins and Zwan) and mixed by David Bottrill. As part of their 44-song work-in-progress, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, Oceania is βan album within an album.β Here is an inside listen to Oceania with commentary from the front-man himself.
