15 Awesome Photos from the London Olympics
In only five days of competition, the 30th Olympic Games have not disappointed. Yesterday was the official coronation of Olympic king Michael Phelps, as the Maryland native anchored the 4 x 200 relay team to gold, giving him a record 19 Olympic medals. Phelps’ record setting accomplishment officially vaulted him into the shrine of American Olympic greats, along with the likes of Carl Lewis, Jim Thorpe, and Jesse Owens. Right as Phelps helped his team win gold, another American team, albeit a bit smaller and younger, dominated their own competition. The USA Women’s Gymnastics team won the team competition for the first time in 16 years. Reigning world champion Jordyn Wieber played the redemption card by putting in a solid performance after failing to qualify for the all-around final. And it’s worth noting that the team, after appearing on the Olympics preview issue of Sports Illustrated, did not succumb to the vaunted “SI cover jinx.”
It hasn’t been a week yet and I’ve about had it with Ryan Seacrest. But hey, it’s the Olympics, and nothing can deter me from watching hard work and determination pay off for a group of talented individuals under the world’s spotlight. Below are 15 photos from the first five days of competition, thanks to the photogs at Sports Illustrated. Enjoy.
