Open Your Ears [Typhoon]
By Moira Chambers - @MoChambaz
About two years ago, the Internet Gods fatefully introduced me to Portland-based indie rock band Typhoon through the track CPR/Claws Pt. 2. After I heard this song, with its orchestrated instrumentals and soothing vocals, I wondered how I had not heard of this band. I looked into their other albums and while CPR/Claws Pt. 2 (Off the album “Hunger & Thirst”) continued to be a favorite, I discovered I loved their album “A New Kind of House”, as well. For the past two years I have played their slow, capturing melodies toward the top of my iTunes- hypnotized by their passionate lyrics and complex, strong, instrumental sound.
Typhoon was formed back in 2005, by thirteen Portland musicians interested in bringing their unique talents together to experiment with sound. The group self-released their first three releases before breaking up in 2008. Typhoon reunited in 2012 to find a more composed, consistent sound, resulting in the release of 2 albums Hunger & Thirst (2010) and then A New Kind of House (2011). The band is about to release their third full-length album, from which I’m sure we can expect big things.
Typhoon remains a true Portland indie band, a large group of talented musicians that are more interested in creating awesome, distinct music than making it big. They performed at music festivals South by Southwest and Lollapalooza in 2011, and again at South by Southwest in March this past year. Otherwise, however, the band generally plays at smaller, artsy venues- spending the majority of their time in the Portland area.
