Red Bull Stratos
Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner will have to wait for the proper weather conditions before he will attempt to be the first person ever to break the speed of sound barrier by free falling from space. Baumgartner has been working extensively with scientists and engineers on the mission, which is sponsored by Red Bull and is titled “Red Bull Stratos.”
Baumgartner, who will be outfitted with a supersonic spacesuit, will ascend 120,000 ft. into the stratosphere in what’s been described in simple terms as a “balloon” and “capsule.” Once he reaches the proper altitude, he will exit the capsule, fall towards the earth, and use a parachute to land. Throughout the mission, Baumgartner and his team will be collecting valuable medical and scientific data.
The videos below showcases the successful “test jump” Baumgartner completed in New Mexico only a few months ago and a promotional video for the mission.
Update: Due to High Winds the mission has been ABORTED. The next supposed launch date has been postponed.
